Devan Amber Hayes obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Dance Performance from Kent State University. During her tenure at Kent State, she studied with various faculty members and attended master classes with diverse techniques and styles including Modern, Jazz, Ballet, Tap, Hip Hop, West African and Kathak (Northern Indian).

She had the privilege of performing original works by faculty members and students every semester throughout her university term. She was a member of the Kent Dance Ensemble, the Pre-Professional University Dance Company that presents mainstage concerts, lecture demonstrations, and community outreach. As an ensemble member, she had the opportunity to work with MamLuft&Co. Dance.

She was the recipient of a scholarship to work with Garth Fagan Dance Company, choreographer for The Lion King, in 2015 and returned in 2016 and 2017 to continue her studies. Devan also attended the 2016 José Limón Summer Workshop.

Along with dancing on stage, Devan has had numerous opportunities to work backstage and be a part of many production teams. She worked at the School of Theatre & Dance Performing Arts Box Office for two years as a staff member and house manager.

She has worked closely with the non-profit organization, Ballet in the City, assisting with master classes, recruitment, and Gala events. Devan has taught outreach classes at the Boys and Girls Clubs of East Cleveland, sponsored by Ballet in the City.

Hayes was a dancer and captain for the NBA G-League dance team, Canton Charge Girls and had the honor to be apart of the final Cleveland Cavalier Girls season in 2018-2019.

With dance being a large part of her life, Devan has always stayed up to date on Health, Wellness, and Nutrition. In 2018, Devan received her Pure Barre Fitness Certification. In 2020, Hayes became Co-Owner of Brown Sugar Beauty Supply, an online retail store that provides natural products and sponsor for Brown Sugar Dance Academy.

Currently, Devan is the Artistic Director of Brown Sugar Dance Academy along with instructing at Pure Barre, teaching at Cleveland Dance Academy, Mayne Attractions Studios, The Tutu School, and serving as an Outreach Teaching Artist through Rainey Dance Institute. Devan is also serving as Board Secretary for Buck Out Cleveland. She has surrounded and immersed herself into the Dance Community to help foster collaboration and be a representative for those seeking careers in the arts.

Devan is in pursuit of increasing dance education and opportunities for dancers with darker hues!
